Every child has the right to learn

Education plays an important role in shaping a child's future but children around the world continue to face barriers that prevent them from attending school. Poverty remains a significant threat to education for children whose families cannot afford school fees or who are relied on to work and contribute financially. In poor communities, suitable education for children with disabilities is especially limited and girls are hindered by cultural norms and gender-based violence including child marriage and sexual exploitation.

129 million girls are out of school around the world.

2/3 of children in low income countries are estimated to complete primary school.

1 in 5 preschool aged children are not enrolled in preschool.

Access to Education Around the world, The Salvation Army's operates 2,500+ schools. Many of these schools are strategically positioned in communities where access to education may not be readily available. Some are focused on specialized education to meet unique needs such as our School for the Blind in Jamaica and the Matumaini School for the Disabled in Tanzania.

School Fees & Supplies

In our 224 Children's Homes, we ensure every child has the opportunity to attend school as we support their education by ensuring their school fees are paid for and they have adequate supplies.

Tutoring

In our 2,500 community centers, drop-in cetners for youth and day centers for street children, we focus on supplementing children's education with tutoring and homework assistance.

Stories From the Field

The communities we serve are filled with some of the most inspiring people you’d ever want to meet. Their stories of ingenuity and perseverance are examples for us all.

Sponsorship Brings Dignity Through Education

Njoro is an agricultural town where most families rely on farming for their survival. Many children in rural areas of Kenya leave school at an early age to help their families at home, perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Stigma, discrimination, and poverty pose additional threats to children with disabilities, who are often left at home and end up at risk of abuse and neglect.

At The Salvation Army’s Njoro Special School, children with physical and mental disabilities are treated with dignity and respect. The children are prepared for a bright future as they are provided with life skills training where they develop self-reliance as they learn to bathe, wash their clothes and cook. They are also prepared for independence and success through education and vocational training in bead work, shoe repair and hairdressing.
