The Hon. Elbra Wedgeworth Joins National Salvation Army Advisory Board
DENVER, COLO. (Feb. 11, 2025) – The Hon. Elbra M. Wedgeworth, a longtime Denver public servant who uniquely served in all three branches of Denver city government, was elected to the National Advisory Board of The Salvation Army, based in Washington, D.C.
“As a woman who grew up in northeast Denver going to The Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center to now have the opportunity and honor to represent the Intermountain Division on the National Advisory Board is a wonderful opportunity to support the overall goals and objectives of The Salvation Army, and to give back,” Wedgeworth said.
Wedgeworth, a member of the Denver Metro Advisory Board for The Salvation Army Intermountain Division, began her career in public service as a City Council Senior Analyst. From 1994 through 1996, she was the Clerk and Recorder for the City and County of Denver. She also served as a member of the Denver Election Commission.
Wedgeworth was the Director of Community Relations and Philanthropic Affairs at the Denver Health and Hospital Authority. She then was elected in 1999 to the Denver City Council and served as Council president. In 2007, she returned to Denver Health to serve as the Chief Government and Community Relations Officer.
Wedgeworth was President/Chairperson of the Board for the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee. Her leadership was crucial to Denver being chosen to host the Democratic National Convention in 2008.
“We are blessed to have Elbra joining the National Advisory Board,” said Major Nesan Kistan, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Intermountain Division. “As a longtime advocate for Denver, she’s been a strong and passionate leader on our Denver Metro Advisory Board. I look forward to seeing how she translates this important work to the national level and I’m grateful for her keen leadership.”
Wedgeworth has received many accolades for her tireless public work: She was named one of Colorado’s Most Influential Women by The Denver Post and one of Denver’s 25 Most Powerful Women by the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Wedgeworth was inducted into the Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame by the Denver Public Library. The Denver Business Journal awarded her its Legacy Award and she was named by the Denver Black Pages as one of Metro Denver’s most influential African Americans.
In 2014, the Elbra M. Wedgeworth Municipal Building was dedicated in the historic Five Points neighborhood to honor Wedgeworth for her more than 30 years of public service to the City and County of Denver.
After retiring in 2019, Wedgeworth founded Casel & Associates, LLC, a consulting firm that specializes in creating community engagement, leadership resources and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion plans.
