For many families, the struggles of disease management and the burdens of everyday life are difficult to manage. The Salvation Army is committed to providing basic health services to low-income and homeless individuals and operates three programs in Southern California that address the major health issues faced in these communities.
No one has ever turned away for lack of funds at the Oxnard Medical & Dental Clinic. This free clinic serves Ventura County by providing dental and medical care to the poor and uninsured. Over 200 patients are treated each month, providing primary care for problems ranging from ear infections and cavities to diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
The Salvation Army also provides transitional and permanent supportive housing for people and families with HIV/AIDS. Clients have access to a community support system and active case management, in order to help keep them on the right track. Good health and independence are attainable with just an extra helping hand in the form of peer-to-peer support, advice from a caseworker, and on-site childcare.
At Bell Shelter, the Recuperative care unit provides post-hospitalization services for homeless adults who need additional care. This program is operated by JWCH in partnership with The Salvation Army.
