The Salvation Army Delivers Sweet Treats to Hometown Heroes in Anchorage
National Donut Day
Anchorage, AK – This Friday, June 4, 2021, The Salvation Army will be celebrating National Donut Day by delivering donuts to our hometown heroes in Anchorage, AK. Held annually on the first Friday in June, National Donut Day first took place in Chicago in 1938 as a Salvation Army fundraiser. Donuts were sold to help raise funds to help those suffering during the Great Depression. Thereafter, National Donut Day was held annually to commemorate The Salvation Army Donut Lassies who provided emotional and spiritual support, fried confectionary, clothes and supplies to soldiers on the frontlines during World War I. For more than a century, The Salvation Army has continued to provide snacks, hydration, and comfort to first responders and frontline workers worldwide.
"National Donut Day celebrates The Salvation Army lassies who delivered donuts to our soldiers on the frontlines in World War I, and this Donut Day, we are celebrating our men and women who have continued to serve our community throughout the pandemic as first responders," said Lt. Colonel Douglas Tollerud, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army in Alaska. “The Salvation Army is pleased to provide a small token of gratitude to these men and women.”
The Salvation Army canteen will be distributing donuts to our Hometown Heroes in Anchorage at the following locations:
- Anchorage Police Department from 6:45 AM - 7:30 AM
- Anchorage Fire Station 1 from 10 AM - 10:30 AM
Teams will also be deployed to share some of the sweet treats at the 12 fire stations throughout Anchorage and at the Alaska Native Medical Center.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Salvation Army has also adapted its own services to meet the growing needs of the most vulnerable throughout the state of Alaska and across the country with increased food support, increased capacity at emergency shelters, an emotional and spiritual care support hotline, live-streamed spiritual services and much more.
