National Salvation Army Week and National Donut Day Celebrated in Alaska
The Salvation Army Celebrates National Salvation Army Week –
A Time to Raise Awareness and Recognize Community Partnerships
Anchorage, AK – National Salvation Army Week (May 9-15, 2022) is set aside to inform the country of the comprehensive nature of the services we provide to help people in need in communities throughout the country and to thank our partners and donors for continuing to help us succeed in Doing the Most Good.
The first National Salvation Army Week was declared by the United States Congress and proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, as a reminder to Americans to give freely of themselves. In his speech, President Eisenhower said:
“Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness, and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”
We have been actively serving the most vulnerable in Alaska since 1898 and continue to broaden our services to meet the changing needs of our fellow Alaskans. The Salvation Army in Alaska supports Alaskans in need through programs providing rehabilitation, cognitive reparation, spiritual assistance, food, shelter and more.
This year in Anchorage, as a part of National Salvation Army Week, we will also celebrate National Donut Day to say once again thank you to our local hometown heroes. National Donut Day is held annually to commemorate The Salvation Army Donut Lassies who provided emotional and spiritual support, fried confectionary, clothes, and supplies to soldiers on the frontlines during World War I. The Salvation Army continues to provide snacks, hydration, and comfort to first responders and frontline workers worldwide.
Lt. Colonel Douglas Tollerud, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army in Alaska stated,
“The Salvation Army is pleased to provide a small token of gratitude to the men and women who protect and serve our communities. This year we include the much deserving veterans in our recognition and celebration.” The Salvation Army will be distributing donuts to our Hometown Heroes in Anchorage and Eagle River on Wednesday, May 11th.
