Corps Officers Provide for Firefighters Battling Wildfire Near Haines
May 31 - After a week of fighting wildfires near Haines, Alaska, Hotshot Crews, also known as emergency wildfire firefighters, were aided with provisions by nearby Haines Salvation Army officers.
"Had an early morning breakfast, 6 AM, on the fire line, after a night of drizzling rain, it finally looks like it might start winding down," said Haines Salvation Army Officer, Lt. Kevin Woods, Saturday morning on June 1. "It’s been a long week, but it’s been an honor and a privilege being the hands and feet of Jesus."
According to a June 9 article published by KTUU, this year’s Alaska wildfire season has passed one million acres burned.
Juneau Corps Hosts Summer Vacation Bible School
In June, The Salvation Army Juneau Corps hosted a summer Vacation Bible School for Juneau youth. The "Roar" themed bible school taught participating students bible stories, songs, science projects related to bible studies and videos that encourage bible lessons.
Each day, different bible lessons were taught through Safari Animals featured in the movie 'Roar". Including the volunteer staff and special missionary team guests from Liberty Nazarene who spent time in Juneau rejuvenating Salvation Army camp property, the Juneau Corps vacation bible school had 52 participants during the week of lessons. Overall, the school taught participants that God is good and will stay with them forever.
Sitka Corps Soup Kitchen Offers Meals to the Hungry
The Salvation Army Sitka Corps operates a community lunch service Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM, serving about 200 meals weekly to those who need it. In April 2019, the Corps noticed the supply of plates, cups, napkins, and other paper products was running low and the Corps did not have the money budgeted to buy these products for the remainder of the year.
In May, Sitka Corps Officer Matthew Morrow made an appeal to the Sitka Community to help supply paper products for the meal program. However, in that same month, the appeal was made on a local radio station. Generous listeners in Sitka responded and donated over 500 pounds of paper products to help The Salvation Army continue to provide the meal program. Kenai Corps Youth Team Wins State Bible Bowl Championship
April 27, The Salvation Army Kenai Corps Bible Bowl team won its first Alaska Division Bible Bowl competition. This year, six teams studied the 21 chapters of the Book of John to compete in pre-trials competitions leading up to the divisional championship Bible Bowl competition.
The two opposing teams, Kenai Corps and Anchorage Corps, completed two rounds of timed questions before declaring the Kenai team champions. Trivia was asked in a variety of ways from
The Kenai team traveled to Seattle to compete in the territorial-wide Bible Bowl competition where they didn’t make the cut as Western Territorial Bible Bowl champions, but look forward to competing again next year.
