When Reaching Out Really Makes a Difference

Kake Community Center Provides Warmth for Local Family

In November, Lt. Catherine Dooley received a call from a mother of two children who had been referred to The Salvation Army in Kake, a remote island community in Southeast Alaska, for heating fuel assistance.

Her partner who normally provided for the family was unable to work due to an injury and the family needed help. They had completely run out of heating fuel during one of the coldest months of the year and needed financial help to have it filled. The Kake Corps provided the funding needed to warm the family’s home as well as supply food.

“The family was unaware that we were able to provide this type of assistance to families in need in our community,” said Lt. Dooley. “I am glad we had the provisions to provide for the family until their financial needs were met.”

Salvation Army Provides Thanksgiving Meals to All in Need

The Salvation Army Older Alaskans Program (OAP) served a special turkey meal on Thanksgiving Day to their roster of housebound seniors and individuals with disabilities in addition to anyone who requested a Thanksgiving meal.

Thanks to local volunteers and The Salvation Army staff, the Anchorage-based program provided over 400 Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings to those in need on Thanksgiving Day.

“It really takes a lot of work from our small staff to prepare meals for our clients over the long weekend, but we are lucky enough to have a community that really cares about their neighbors,” said OAP Director Terry Chubin. “It warms my heart to see so many people work together to make sure everyone is able to feel included on a holiday that is all about being thankful.”
