Dimond Thrift Store Open

The Salvation Amy Family Thrift Store on Dimond Blvd. in Anchorage celebrated its grand re-opening on July 11. Over 200 supporters and shoppers attended the celebration which included an official ribbon cutting with the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.

Open after a seven-month closure due to damages caused by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook southcentral Alaska in November, Salvation Army staff are happy to finally have the thrift store open.

“It has been a process to get the store up and running again after repairs and I’m glad we are able to continue to offer affordable gently-used goods to the Anchorage community after a long-awaited reopening,” said Oscar Shaw IV, The Salvation Army Alaska Division Regional Retail Manager.

The grand re-opening was a family-friendly event that had volunteers providing face painting and balloons for kids, store sales through the weekend, door prizes, an informational booth and refreshments served from the Emergency Disaster Services canteen. Thank you to Dino’s Donuts in Anchorage for donating dozens of donuts for the big day.

“The grand re-opening of our Dimond store had a great turnout,” said Major John Brackenbury, The Salvation Army Alaska Divisional Commander. “We recognized some of our loyal customer base from before the earthquake and welcomed new customers for the big event. We look forward to continued sales to benefit our local community programs.”

The thrift store, like all others owned by The Salvation Army, accepts gently-used donated goods from the community to sell to raise funds for local community programs and services open year-round to community members in need. The Dimond store’s sales directly benefit programs like The Salvation Army’s McKinnell House, Alaska’s only family shelter; Older Alaskans Program, a homebound senior and congregate meal delivery service; Clitheroe Center, a dual-diagnosis rehabilitation program; and Emergency Disaster Services.

The Salvation Army Family Thrift Store on Dimond will be open Monday – Saturday 10AM – 8PM and Sundays 11AM – 5PM. Donation hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10AM – 6PM, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 12PM – 6PM and Sundays from 11AM – 5PM.
