Salvation Army Christmas Gift Disbursements Go Far and Wide in Alaska

Dec 23, 2019 | by Lessa Peter

Christmas is Just 2 Days Away!

Each year The Salvation Army provides gifts to children of families who are struggling to provide a special Christmas in Alaska. From partnering with the Alaska National Guard to make Operation Santa Claus happen, to each Corps Community Center planning their community’s disbursement event, The Salvation Army strives to make the holidays a special time of year for everyone.

In Fairbanks, food boxes and gifts were distributed at the local city’s Shoppers Forum Mall. The participating families in Fairbanks applied during an earlier registration period. Mat-Su Valley residents in need of Christmas assistance picked up food and gifts from The Salvation Army Mat-Su Valley Corps this past weekend. In Anchorage, thousands of families received food and gifts for Christmas at the Anchorage Neighborhood GIFT event last week at ChangePoint Church.

In other communities where The Salvation Army is active, services vary. For those who need last-minute assistance, please contact your local Salvation Army Corps Community Center.

“The services provided in each community are different because the needs of each community in Alaska are unique,” said Major John Brackenbury, The Salvation Army Alaska Divisional Commander. “Due to the generosity of so many Alaskans, we are able to provide programs that help families who are trying to make ends meet to pay for astronomical heating bills in rural Alaska to everyday necessities like food in larger cities.”
