Salvation Army Alaska Grateful for FedEx Delivery of Generators
The Salvation Army in Alaska is very grateful for the donation of two generators that will help power key facilities and allow us to remain operational in serving our community following an emergency event.
Being a resource challenged division, every offer of in-kind support helps increases our ability and capacity to serve the needs of Alaskans. Getting items shipped to Alaska can often cost as much, if not more than the offered item. We couldn't have received these units without the support of FedEx to assist with the shipping.
The generators were trucked to Alaska, which wasn't without its challenges. Once loaded up, the truck broke down en route. Upon reaching Alaska, they learned there was a special permit needed, causing a delay in Tok. One of the most challenging parts was figuring out where to offload the generators as our small warehouse doesn't have a loading dock. After brainstorming through three or four scenarios, they were delivered to Carlile Transportation (confirmed only hours before they were due to arrive in Anchorage.)
A key role for The Salvation Army following a significant emergency event is to help launch mass feeding efforts. Both units will be set up for use on the same campus. One will connect to support our central kitchen facility, where every day we prepare and deliver over 400 meals to homebound seniors. The second unit will connect and partially power the Anchorage Corps Community Center, which is a multi-use facility. Depending on the need, it can support sheltering of survivors or responders. It can also serve as a disaster assistance center, volunteer reception center or feeding site. Finally, the generators will help ensure we have a safe gathering place for participants in our residential programs in the event of an extended winter power outage.
We are thankful for the generosity of others that provides us with the privilege and opportunity to serve Alaskans.
