McKinnell House Family Shelter Celebrates a New Birth

Apr 17, 2023 | by Natalie Clendenin

Family staying at McKinnell House welcomes a new daughter named McKinnell.

The Salvation Army Alaska Division would like to welcome little McKinnell into the world. She was recently born while her family was staying at McKinnell House Family Shelter, just as they were about to transition into their own permanent housing. Her parents were happy to share she's 5 lbs. 9 oz., and 18 1/4 inches long!

Peter, Margaret, and their son Sonshyne were previously living in a difficult situation with extended family and needed to quickly find a new place to live,

as Margaret began having serious health challenges due to the stressful environment while also being pregnant with her second child. Peter shared that they were previously at other shelters who were helpful, but they were unable to stay together as a family until they came to McKinnell House. They feel that their time at McKinnell, which started on the last day of the year 2022, has brought them good luck and many blessings in this new year; so much so that they decided to name their daughter McKinnell, due to all of the positive changes they've experienced in their lives while being at the family shelter. "We feel so blessed and have hope now. We have a safe space to heal our family," Margaret shared.

Peter added, "We've got a chance to get our lives going again. Our new baby came while we were here and our older son who is 18 months old now took his first steps while we were here. So many positive experiences."

We pray many blessings over their family as they move forward and say a very big thank you to all of you in the community who donate time and money to our programs like McKinnell House Family Shelter. You help to make a difference in the lives of families like this one.
