Thousands of Thanksgiving Meals Delivered to Needy

Nov 22, 2016 | by Sally Robb Haims

What
This Thanksgiving, The Salvation Army continues a long-time tradition of bringing the joy of the holiday to thousands who cannot leave their homes because of age or illness with its annual Thanksgiving Meal Delivery program. Hundreds of volunteers help deliver the meals on Thanksgiving morning. For some recipients, a visit from a Salvation Army volunteer is the only contact from the outside world they will receive that day.

More than 1,200 pounds of turkey is cooked to provide for 4,000 meals that will go to shut-ins and seniors. Dinner consists of sliced turkey with 65 gallons of gravy, 450 pounds of stuffing, 1,000 pounds of green beans, 1,600 pounds of sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, cookies, and other sides. The entire meal is prepared in the Harbor Light kitchen, staffed largely by graduates of The Salvation Army's drug and alcohol recovery program.
